FORUM FAQ
Should I wax my string?<./h5>
Yes...No...Maybe. NEVER use wax with a transaxle yo-yo!
This is an often disagreed upon finer point of yo-yoing, and it once again, boils down to personal choice and playing style. If you decide that waxing is for you, or you want to experiment with it, remember that when waxing, LESS IS MORE.
Too much wax can ruin a yo-yo, especially one that is not equipped with a replaceable axle sleeve. Apply it very sparingly, and avoid heavily perfumed and densely colored candles. There are several suitable kinds of wax, and some of them include uncolored paraffin wax, as well as wax that is sold specifically as yo-yo string wax.
Should I lubricate my trans-axle yo-yo?
Many manufacturers suggest that this be done periodically.
It is important not to over lubricate the axle sleeve or bearing, and it is a matter of trial and error experimentation to decide how much lube to use (try with small amounts first). Some products are commercially available and meant specifically for lubricating yo-yos (Duncan's Tube of Lube, for instance) and some other favorites are Vaseline, and Vaseline Lip Therapy.
Which yo-yos loop the best?
For the billionth time, it's a matter of personal choice.
However, certain body styles of yo-yo are not meant for looping, and it is important to note that yo-yos configured in the "butterfly" mode will not loop worth a darn. The butterfly style was designed to allow the yo-yo to be landed on the string during string tricks. The Imperial shaped and Modified shape yo-yo designs are considered the best looping yo-yos.
Was the yo-yo originally designed as a weapon?
No. This little nugget was created as part of a marketing play in the late 1940s, and has, unfortunately, been widely accepted as fact. The earliest known yo-yo is from 450 B.C. Greece, and was designed as a children's toy. It is currently on display at the Smithsonian Museum. The yo-yo was never designed as a weapon, although anyone who has every hit themselves in the face with one can agree that they do hurt like heck.
Who is the best yo-yo player of all time?
The technology and advancements made in the yo-yo world over the last ten years dictate that whoever this person is, he is alive and active today. The four National Grand Master Yo-yo players, Dale Oliver, Dale Myrberg, Dennis Mcbride and Bill DeBoisblanc, are all incredibly talented, innovative and creative individuals who have been recognized for their contributions to the sport and art of yo-yo play. The four National Master yo-yo players, Jennifer Baybrook, Steve Brown, Dave Schulte, and Rick Wyatt, are also incredibly talented, innovative and creative individuals who have been recognized for their contributions to yo-yo play in more recent years. If a "best" yo-yo player had to be chosen, it would likely be one of these eight people.
Many other players both past and present, have made their mark in the yo-yo world, and it is important to note that yo-yoing is an art form as well as a sport, and it is hard to judge how any individual chooses to express themselves artistically.
What is the best way to learn two-handed yo-yo tricks?
Whatever works for you. Keep in mind that one-handed play presents a great deal of challenge, and it is best to build a solid foundation with as many one-handed tricks as possible before moving on to two-handed work.
One common way to get started with two handed play is to strengthen your off hand by learning as many tricks as possible. Some players recommend that you put off playing with your dominant hand for a week or so, and take the time to relearn all the tricks you know with your off hand.
There are many resources available on the internet that are helpful in learning two handed yo-yo tricks, as well as many instructional video tapes.
