Duncan Releases New Offstring Yo-Yo; the Flying Panda

10/24/2003

While yo-yo sales continue to climb worldwide, Duncan continues to release new models such as the Flying Panda yo-yo. The Flying Panda is a ball-bearing yo-yo designed specifically for complicated string tricks, and "off-string" play. Off-String is a style of play that was conceived in the 1950s, but not perfected until the late 1990s. The premise of off-string is simple: the yo-yo is not tied to the string.

Yes, it is absolutely amazing to watch.

By winding the string around the axle of the yo-yo without actually attaching it, players can throw the yo-yo high into the air, and catch it (still spinning!) back on the string, allowing for some of the most amazing yo-yo tricks ever seen. The Flying Panda is another revolution in yo-yo play from Duncan Toys, the company that started the yo-yo revolution in 1929.

Off-string play has rapidly gained popularity alongside counterweight-style play as "the players choice". Players have competed with off-string routines in the World Yo-Yo Contest, the National Yo-Yo Contest, and numerous Regional, State, and City contests. New off-string tricks are invented every day, and there are even dedicated off-string teams in Japan. Off-string is fun for the novice, challenging to the experienced, and amazing to watch. It has even been giving its own division in the World Yo-Yo Contest, alongside counterweight yo-yo play!

The Flying Panda was designed to meet the needs of standard and off-string players. Input from several World and National Off-String Yo-Yo Champions, as well as U.S. National Yo-Yo Master Steve Brown, was considered in every aspect of the design. It features a hard plastic body, with over-molded rubber rims giving the yo-yo more durability for missed catches, and a wider target area for the player to catch. With its ball-bearing axle, and Friction Stickers for smooth, perfect response, the Flying Panda is a balanced, versatile yo-yo for today's players, amateur and professional alike. Packed in cases of 12 pieces, the Flying Panda retails for around $20.
